For the last ten years the use of supported gold catalysts has been discussed and their suitability examined in a variety of different chemical catalytic reactions. Very recently, the promising role of these catalysts also within fuel cell (FC) systems was revealed. This new energy saving technology now runs through a vibrant development, not only in FC powered vehicles, but also for home heating/electricity generation applications.

We, at the eastern boarder of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, believe that the newly developed gold catalysts will result in essential simplicity of the FC power trains. One of the requirements to achieve this goal lies in the improvement of the Au-dispersion on the support, attaching Au particles of ≤ 2 nm in average (picture).
